    The splendid and the vile

    Erik Larson · 2020

On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next twelve months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally—and willing to fight to the end.

I've been a huge fan of Erik Larson's book because he writes non-fiction in a very exciting ways where it doesn't feel like filler.

The Splendid & the Vile was the most enjoyable book of his imo.

_The Splendid and The Vile._ My sister recommended it, and it was great on audiobook. I found the stories about Beaverbrook especially interesting. I found the insight fascinating into what Churchill was thinking during the war, how much he leaned on his closest advisors, and how badly some of Hitler's advisors fucked up. I wound up reading (or listening) to it through the lens of how important relationships are in whatever kind of work that we do. Also, in 2021 I read _The Moral Animal: Why We Are the Way We Are_ and it was the best book I've read in years.

The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson. This is a factual account of 1940 and 1941 England, told as a day by day or month by month narrative describing Churchill and his close circle as the Germans ramped up their bombing campaign.

It reads like a thriller, and it taught me so much about the history of the war that I never learned in high school or college.

I think I’ll add that to my list! I am currently reading (well, I ended up trying out Audible so listening now) to The Splendid and the Vile which is another WW2 book that’s quite fascinating.
