A great piece of advice I got for public speaking is that you can structure a talk around the hero's journey... but you aren't the hero. You are the Yoda-like advisor character who's helping guide the hero (your audience) along the path, from their current default state to a new, improved mental model of the world at the end.

Nancy Duarte's book Resonate covers this idea in detail.

I took a really good course at Stanford Business School about public speaking.

One of the course textbooks was Resonate by Nancy Duarte, which offered a really interesting twist. The book talks about the classic "Hero's Journey" story template, but then flips it on its head: it suggests you consider your audience to be the people going on the journey, and it's your job to guide them through the different stages: the initial call to adventure, the trials along the way and the eventual return where they have been changed in some way (by their understanding of the topic you are talking about).

I thought that was really neat.

Want to really dive into this? Read Duarte's Resonate (available free from the author here: http://resonate.duarte.com/ )

Same concepts, just much more in depth, with great examples.

This 'advice' is a really great re-skin of Nancy Duarte's book Resonate.[1]

Nancy is one of the genius' behind Duarte Designs[2] whose client list includes Steve Jobs and his infamous Apple presentations as well as Al Gore and his 'Inconvenient Truth' presentation.

Exactly. I recommend reading Resonate by Nancy Duarte (from the company that did Al Gore's slides).
