    What Hacker News says

Having everyone have to discover the pro/con's of every system themselves, in the dark, with no social media / blogging around it, seems like a very strange position to me.

Technology should be highly social. Especially open source! It in unique-for-technology ways gives us something real to be social over. We can share and unfold and unpack.

This isn't entirely what you are talking about but Architectures of Open Source is still one of the best "what is this" explorations of the tech world out there. I think good advocacy has a lot of these elements (if not so total) in it. In ways that can show the bigger pictures, which AOSA at it's best does! https://aosabook.org/en/

I confess, I was kind of hoping for a technical review of the firmware, the code. This is a perfectly cromulent xteink crosspoint review from a consumer perspective, but I feel like there's already a bunch of those, all over. It would have been sick to have a mini Architectures of Open Source (https://aosabook.org/en/) book type thing, that dives into the structure and systems of the code, how it work together to be CrossPoint.

Love the idea of RL for codebase health.

And a benchmark to measure against!

Imagine a "MaintainabilityBench" that rewards models which detect code duplication while working on a task and perform some refactor instead of glibly duplicating; or that detect the need for a new architectural layer, or that hoist a type constraint so there's no need for dumb casts. You can keep on imagining scenarios.

There are probably a few hundred distinct elements to RL for. The books "Working With Legacy Code" and "Architecture of Open Source Applications" would be great fodder.

Sadly don't have time to build it, there's this mountain of reviews in front of me...

In this vein, I really recommend "Architecture of Open Source Applications."[1] It's a book series where you learn architecture by example, with each chapter written by a maintainer of the project in question. This lets you learn not only what the architecture is, but what are the constraints that shaped it, usually history and changing project visions.

Not all chapters are equally good or equally interesting, that's the curse of a multi-author book, and all of them are dated, but I think the book is worth reading nonetheless.
