    Quantum Night

    Robert J. Sawyer · 2016

Experimental psychologist Jim Marchuk has developed a flawless technique for identifying the previously undetected psychopaths lurking everywhere in society. But while being cross-examined about his breakthrough in court, Jim is shocked to discover that he has lost his memories of six months of his life from twenty years previously--a dark time during which he himself committed heinous acts. Jim is reunited with Kayla Huron, his forgotten girlfriend from his lost period and now a quantum physicist who has made a stunning discovery about the nature of human consciousness. As a rising tide of violence and hate sweeps across the globe, the psychologist and the physicist combine forces in a race against time to see if they can do the impossible--change human nature--before the entire world descends into darkness.

The Wayfarers books The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and A Closed and Common Orbit were quite good. Fantastic world building and characters, although the plots seem to meander about with not too much purpose.

Recently ploughed through The Expanse series.

Dark Matter was a good read if you like parallel universes.

The Rho Agenda series was a surprisingly good read.

Quantum Night was something a bit different from Robert Sawyer.

And Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard would probably have to be rated my favourite for the year.

I recall reading the science fiction book "Quantum Night" by Robert J. Sawyer which touches on philosophical zombies. Not a spoiler: in the book a mechanism of the plot is that folks can be conscious with emotions, or a sociopath, or a philosophical zombie; science fiction magic allows the population to cycle-switch between these three states.

There is a science fiction novel by Robert J. Sawyer titled "Quantum Night" which touches on this. Basically, "three states of minds" which amount to "normal, zombie, psychopath".

The story explores "flipping the switches" on a global scale, among other things.

I recently read 'Quantum Night' by Robert J Sawyer, which explores psychopaths, people with an "inner life/monologue", and "philosopher zombies" -- people who don't have such an inner monologue and therefore are fairly manipulatable.

Part of the book's setting is that most people lack an inner monologue, a fair amount of people are psychopaths, and few people are "normal" non-psychopaths with inner monologues by a ratio of 4:2:1.

Even if you don't enjoy science fiction, it's an interesting read.

Farmer in the Sky is one of those books I re-read every few years.

      Horror:

Not really a horror fan, but stumbled into the I Am Not a Serial Killer series by accident a few years ago and love it. Read the forth and fifth in the series this year. If you’re more a psychological thriller than horror fan, give it a go anyway. (Shame about the awful movie adaptation.)

      Crime/Thriller:

Fool Me Once upholds Harlan Coben’s usual good quality reads.

Memory Man and its sequel were good reads. Must chase up more by this author some time.

According to my goodreads list I’ve ready sixty books this year (so far). Although looking back through them while compiling this list, some of them were short stories. It will be interesting to see what my page count is when I do my yearly reading stats in a couple of weeks.
