    Wild Cards

    George R. R. Martin, Wild Cards Trust, John J. Miller · 1986

The alien virus arrived on Earth just after World War II - and the world was never the same. For those who become infected, there are two results: death, or transformation. And depending on the recipient, death is sometimes the preferable outcome. Only a few lucky ones become super-human "aces" as a side effect of the virus; the rest are turned into horrible, grotesque "jokers." It's a strange and wonderful, terrible and terrifying world where anything can go. A world that, in a twist of fate, could lie just outside your door. A world of Wild Cards.

Invasion sounds a bit like Wild Cards and Bitter Seeds, both of which I loved.

I hadn't realize that Wild Cards is finally back in print!

There are lots and lots of fun shared sci fi and fantasy universes out there, some of which were carefully designed to be a shared universe from the start. George R. R. Martin's "Wild Cards" comes to mind. Plus of course all of DC and Marvel. Every fan fiction author knows the fun of picking a ready to go universe and going "what if this guy fought/loved that guy?" Sometimes setting up a template can be a really cool way to encourage growth, like an artificial coral reef.

But this specific one does seem like a complex starting point.

There are a lot of genre works built off roleplaying campaigns, including but surely not limited to:

      Steven Brust's Dragaera

      George R. R. Martin's Wild Cards

Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont's Malazan

Daniel Abraham and Ty Bank's Expanse
