The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe has a lot of interesting stuff on this wrt the first astronauts (who were sourced from test pilots). The test pilots saw the astronauts as second class citizens, at first, because they weren't actually doing any steering. Once the astronauts became famous, they started demanding more manual takeovers, which the engineers didn't want to build because it could only really hurt, but the engineers were forced to build them!

Well, yes, we certainly can as is shown by the coverage of SpaceX launches. I guess NASA is just not as focused on publicity as commercial launch operators are. They should have read The Right Stuff and learned the mantra No bucks, no Buck Rogers. Next time, better I hope.

Highly recommend The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe about the Gemini astronauts. They mostly were test pilots prior.

There's a good book, "The Right Stuff" [0] by Tom Wolfe, which goes into quite a bit of detail about the stories and some of the psychology around being a test pilot in those days, and in particular about the men chosen as the Mercury Seven astronauts, many of whom were also later involved in both the Gemini and Apollo programs.

The Right Stuff - Test Pilots

Arrowsmith - Sinclair Lewis - Medical Profession

McTeague - Frank Norris - Dentistry

Two Years Behind the Mast - Dana - Sailor in thr Merchant Marine

The Red and the Black - Stendahl - Catholic Clergy

The Centurions - Jean Larteguy - Infantry/Special Ops

I always suggest reading fiction, it is a good source for lot of incidental knowledge about various aspects of life.

Can anyone recommend books/novels on the English legal profession? Thanks.

It is often said that many pilots emulate Chuck Yeager's voice.[1] Yeager was a US test pilot and jet flying ace.

Tom Wolfe has a great novel about Yeager and other test pilots called "The Right Stuff."
