    Animal liberation

    Peter Singer · 1975

The Book That Started A Revolution Since its original publication in 1975, this groundbreaking work has awakened millions of concerned men and women to the shocking abuse of animals everywhere -- inspiring a worldwide movement to eliminate much of the cruel and unnecessary laboratory animal experimentation of years past. In this newly revised and expanded edition, author Peter Singer exposes the chilling realities of today's "factory forms" and product-testing procedures -- offering sound, humane solutions to what has become a profound environmental and social as well as moral issue. An important and persuasive appeal to conscience, fairness, decency and justice, Animal Liberationis essential reading for the supporter and the skeptic alike.

+1. Highly recommend people read “Animal Liberation Now” (“Now”) being the 2023 version of “Animal Liberation” from the 70s.

I became vegetarian after reading the original book, and more recently _mostly_ vegan after reading “Now”. (Still a work in progress as it’s only been a few weeks and takes time to adjust my diet).

Factory Farming is definitely horrendous and it’s not only for the animals killed for meat. Animals kept for egg or milk are essentially mistreated during their entire (short) lives.

Just finished: “Animal Liberation Now”. The original animal liberation book was a major contributing factor to me becoming vegetarian, and this new book has convinced me to become vegan instead

Starting today: “In the shadow of man”.

If this topic interests you, I recommend reading “Animal Liberation” by the philosopher Peter Singer.

I discovered it during my philosophy classes at university, and eventually became vegetarian as a result of this about 15 years ago.

Honestly at this point I can’t remember the details of the book, only that it had enough of an impact to stop me eating meat.

Peter Singer makes this argument in Animal Liberation, one of the seminal works on modern animal ethics. One of Singer's points is that it's ethical to eat animals so long as they are raised and killed in a way to minimize suffering.

IMO everyone should read it, regardless of your stance on eating animals.

Anyone wrestling with these issues could usefully read Animal Liberation by Pete Singer. He delves into many varieties of abstinence from speciesism (as he calls it).

I would recommend jumping in the deep end and start reading primary sources from the east and west and all the places inbetween. Once you start reading and searching - perhaps university library catalogs, you will find many more. Guttenberg and other free ebook sources are great because most of the greats are well out of copyright.

      Kant "Metaphysics of Morals"

      Singer "Animal Liberation"

      Plato "Repulic"

      Einstein "Philosophical Works"

      Hobbes "Leviathan"

Rousseau "Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men"

I have a degree in Philosophy and it is the best thing ever.
