    The Rithmatist

    Brandon Sanderson · 2013

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity’s only defense against the Wild Chalklings. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles. As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students learn the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing—kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery—one that will change Rithmatics—and their world—forever.

It's not nearly so academic (in fact, it's for middle-grade readers) but Brandon Sanderson's The Rithmatist bases its magic system on a unique take on some foundational geometric principles.

For a hard magic system[0] in the fantasy genre, I'd heartily suggest any of Brandon Sanderson's novels.

My favorites are the second set of the Mistborn series (Wax and Wayne), the Stormlight Archives and the Rithmatist.

I think the response is more accurate - that big ideas and epic world-building require a lot of space. http://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2015/may/20/fanta...

And I would cite Brandon Sanderson as a good example (and good counter-example to the original article) - smaller ideas get novellas (Legion, Emperor's Soul), medium-sized ideas get novels (Elantris, Rithmatist, Warbreaker), epic ideas get large novels in series(Mistborn, Way of Kings).

      All excellent, by the way...

Reminds me of the Brandon Sanderson novel, The Rithmatist, where creatures are also trapped in drawn shapes.

OT, however, this made me think of Brandon Sanderson's book The Rithmatist where chalk and its formulation is an integral part of magic.
