    The Art of Intrusion

    Kevin D. Mitnick, William L. Simon · 2005

Hacker extraordinaire Kevin Mitnick delivers the explosive encore to his bestselling The Art of Deception Kevin Mitnick, the world's most celebrated hacker, now devotes his life to helping businesses and governments combat data thieves, cybervandals, and other malicious computer intruders. In his bestselling The Art of Deception, Mitnick presented fictionalized case studies that illustrated how savvy computer crackers use "social engineering" to compromise even the most technically secure computer systems. Now, in his new book, Mitnick goes one step further, offering hair-raising stories of real-life computer break-ins-and showing how the victims could have prevented them. Mitnick's reputation within the hacker community gave him unique credibility with the perpetrators of these crimes, who freely shared their stories with him-and whose exploits Mitnick now reveals in detail for the first time, including: A group of friends who won nearly a million dollars in Las Vegas by reverse-engineering slot machines Two teenagers who were persuaded by terrorists to hack into the Lockheed Martin computer systems Two convicts who joined forces to become hackers inside a Texas prison A "Robin Hood" hacker who penetrated the computer systems of many prominent companies-andthen told them how he gained access With riveting "you are there" descriptions of real computer break-ins, indispensable tips on countermeasures security professionals need to implement now, and Mitnick's own acerbic…

Interesting but it ended so.. abruptly! I was hoping for a LOT more. I think if you're interested in this subject area you must get a copy of Ghost In The Wires, and The Art of Intrusion by Kevin Mitnick.

If you're looking for other stories, The Art of Deception (Mitnick specific) and The Art of Intrusion (not all Mitnick) have a ton.

The Art of Deception and The Art of Intrusion by Mitnick were interesting to me when I read them a long time ago. They really show how important humans are to a system. You can have high tech security equiptment and all it takes is someone to go dumpster diving or appeal to another person's human nature.

I didn't finish it, but I enjoyed The Best of 2600. It's a collection of the old 2600 magazine. Lots of cool older stories in there.

If you are into this kind of stuff, I'd highly recommend Kevin Mitnick's book 'Art of intrusion'. The first chapter describes how a group of engineers (I'd think somewhere in the 80s, early 90's) reverse engineered a popular Las Vegas poker machine, and managed to walk away with milions in profit.

It's also for security. If you've read Kevin Mitnick/Irea Winkler books like Art of Intrusion or Corporate Espionage (1997!) they say monitoring a competitor job ads is great to learn about:

      1. Current trends. 2. Infrastructure

      And more, I can't recall....great books too.
