    Seven Languages in Seven Weeks

    Bruce Tate · 2010

"Seven Languages in Seven Weeks" presents a meaningful exploration of seven languages within a single book. Rather than serve as a complete reference or installation guide, the book hits what's essential and unique about each language.

I was a fan of Seven Languages in Seven Weeks [1] because it exposed you to different paradigms which you could then try to apply where they made sense on whatever tools you were using or building: prototype based, fault tolerante, funcional, logical. Very fun book when used right.

The point being that sometimes the tools themselves don't need to survive because you take the lessons from one thing to another (e.g. move semantics and rust/modern c++)

I value learning new languages, especially as I have yet to find a very good one. Some are pure and beautiful like Scheme, but if you asked me what single language I would take to a lonely island with me where I was stranded, it would still have to be C.

To those here who would like to have some guidance diving into other languages I can recommend these two books:

Bruce Tate: Seven Languages in Seven Weeks https://www.amazon.com/Seven-Languages-Weeks-Programming-Pro...

Bruce Tate: Seven More Languages in Seven Weeks https://www.amazon.com/Seven-More-Languages-Weeks-Shaping/dp...

You can work through them in <4 months, and then we can talk again whether you found it useful (I did).

Seven Languages in Seven Weeks: A Pragmatic Guide to Learning Programming Languages by Bruce Tate

Seriously, check out this book. It's delightful! It'll level you up as a software developer. Also, I've heard it heavily influenced José Valim to create Elixir.
