"If there is a candidate for 'Living Buddha' on earth today, it is Thich Nhat Hanh." • Richard Baker-roshi In The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching, now with added material and new insights, Thich Nhat Hanh introduces us to the core teachings of Buddhism and shows us that the Buddha's teachings are accessible and applicable to our daily lives. Covering such significant teachings as the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Three Doors of Liberation, the Three Dharma Seals, and the Seven Factors of Awakening, The Heart of the Buddha's Teachingis a radiant beacon on Buddhist thought for the initiated and uninitiated alike. "Thich Nhat Hanh shows us the connection between personal, inner peace, and peace on earth." • His Holiness the Dalai Lama "Thich Nhat Hanh is a real poet." • Robert Lowell
It is not like the typical western Buddhist/mindfulness books that obfuscate or obscure the Dharma.
It contains a wealth of wisdom and helped me overcome fundamental misunderstandings with regard to the Four Noble Truths. Suffering is exists, but not all is suffering!
I'd recommend this to anyone curious about wanting to know more about the Buddhist path.
There are tons of sutras available at Access to Insight [2], which all schools of Buddhism use, but one (the Theravada) uses almost exclusively.
Another book that I found really illuminating was Chogyam Trungpa's "Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism" [3]. It helps point out how the teachings can be put into practice.

It has an excellent part about "rebirth", illustrated by waves and water. I now look at the world through different eyes. That is to say, I'm still atheist, love science, and that book never conflicts with reality. But I admit I was wrong on how I saw the world, and now I see it differently.
Zen Buddhism for me is a different way on how to look at the world.
It's not overly spiritual, but there's a relaxing, reassuring, thoughtful, and un-judging sense of peace that permeates this books. Brought me out of a really dark place when I was looking for reasons to keep existing.
Completely changed my world view. As someone who loves science, this book shows that Buddhism is not about belief but a way to look at the world. And that view might be closer to reality than the current one.

I think any atheist rational person should read this, to get a more realistic view on himself/herself and the world around you.
Our society is too individual and self-centered, which is actually a wrong view on how the world works. I recommend this to anyone, especially when you lose someone or something big in your life.
