      It is just the definition of "Logical Implication for Material Conditional" and its truth table; see Material Conditional - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Material_conditional

      I highly recommend the following two books to study Logic from the beginning (for a layman);

      Logic: An Introduction to Elementary Logic by Wilfrid Hodges.

      Introduction to Logic: and to the Methodology of Deductive Sciences by Alfred Tarski.

      Well said.

      Also i highly recommend everybody to read the great logician Alfred Tarski's classic book Introduction to Logic: And to the Methodology of Deductive Sciences to really understand "Logic" which is what Formal Reasoning is based on.

      Came here to add Strang's. In the same spirit of Jaynes', a very good exposition for self-study students.

      In logic, "Introduction to Logic: and to the Methodology of Deductive Sciences" - Tarski.

      I wish that I started studying these three books before college, in order: 1) Tarski's 2) Strang's 3) Jaynes'

      I personally really like Alfred Tarski's book "Introduction to Logic and to the Methodology of Deductive Sciences". The first Polish edition was written in 1936 and the English version is still available from Dover: https://store.doverpublications.com/048628462x.html

      Introduction to Logic: And to the Methodology of Deductive Sciences, by Alfred Tarski. One of my favorite math books, which convinced to pursue an undergrad in math. Being an intro logic book it's completeley self-contained and may not not even feel like a math book, but yet a great intro into foundational stuff.
