Transloadit, a file uploading and media encoding service, posts company news, product launches, and updates on its open tus upload protocol.
HN comments mostly mention it as a recommended service for file uploads, video encoding, and image processing, often by its own staff or competitors.
A hacker I know (who has I team I believe - the debuggable.com guys - both successful bloggers and core teamembers of the cakephp community) has been working on transload.it for a while, it's a pretty good service despite still being in beta, but I haven't put it through its paces like I'm sure you would. (I was working on a wordpress plugin.) It sits on ec2 and will save right into your s3.

I don't know their plans for the full release, but they could be a way to break out of your lock in with encoding.com.
I wrote about this a few months ago: http://simonwillison.net/2009/Nov/23/node/ - it's exciting because it's asynchronous (like Ruby's EventMachine and Python's Twisted) but makes it almost impossible to screw up your event loop. JavaScript is an excellent fit for asynchronous programming.
http://transloadit.com/ is one startup that's using Node.js - it's particularly good for handling large file uploads since it can handle tens of thousands of them in parallel on a single server.
Disclaimer: I'm a friend of the main author and have been peripherally involved (mostly watching from the sidelines) in this project.
Valid points, IMO. Those sound like use cases that might not have been contemplated originally (the idea for the spec grew out of the author's work here: https://transloadit.com).
That said, the spec, and the code around it are both still very much evolving, and are welcoming of input. You can join us on GitHub or in #tusio on Freenode.
I was recently looking for services that could handle resizing and cropping. Personally I prefer the ones that act like a proxy, so I can store the images in my own S3 bucket. Here are the services I found:
http://www.imgix.com/
http://cloudinary.com/
http://www.cdnconnect.com/
http://cloudresize.com/
http://cloudimage.io/
http://www.blitline.com/
https://transloadit.com/
https://uploadcare.com/
http://www.resrc.it/
I particularly like this example image for testing: https://transloadit.com/blog/2010/10/is-your-image-scaling-software-up-to-scratch/
You might be able to do this as a 3-part process instead of expecting the resizing to handle it natively. But that brings up a good question, does the new SIMD goodness work on anything other than 8-bit data? You couldn't do linear in anything less than 16 bits.
Hi!
Our widgets are open source: https://github.com/uploadcare/careful-uploaders
To handle videos, I'd recommend you to check out http://transloadit.com/ . They are something like our competitors, but I believe we have different targeted audience.
We've been thinking about splitting files in parts and everything, but not right now.
Thank you for your suggestions!
