I am all for tidying up. One should not forget though, that there are many reasons for why things end up the way they do (as in, cluttered and untidy). I don't think that it 'just happens' that your house fills itself with things that you never will use. Sure, we can blame consumer culture and capitalistic indoctrination. But if we're honest, most of the stuff that we buy is because we hope that it will change us as a person and that we can fill that emptiness that lingers inside.

In the end, buying will not change lives as much as we think. Change has to come from within and from connecting with others. I really doubt that "300,000 things" will achieve that change.

I think the authors of http://www.theminimalists.com have some great answers regarding the question "if not consumerism, what will add value to my life?". While most of you already know the answer "friends, health, passion, etc.", and are tired of the platitudes, I am sure that it is easy to forget the values in a world surrounded by messages of consumption. If you are interested, I would recommend starting with this article http://www.theminimalists.com/21days/ about how the authors Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus got started on their journey to minimalism.

While I was reading this, I thought "hey they are trying out Minimalism"!!! [1].

      [1]: https://www.theminimalists.com/

I believe many people in this forum fall under the: got plenty of money, spending plenty of money, started medidating to improve life and work performance, found value in decluttering.

I don't know how wide-spread this phenomenon is in Korea, or the integrity of the journalist/article, but even if 200 people do it in a year, it looks like they are trying to simplify their life.

Edit: thinking about this a bit better, this is more like Ascetisism [2] (fromt the Greek Ασκητισμός), than Minimalism, but it is to the same direction.

Trust me when I say that this is all fear. Multiple times I have uprooted family despite all discomfort, odds, safety nets, etc. to pursue a passion. First it was moving out of state to attend graduate school. Second, it was leaving a 6 figure career to pursue my dream. Downsizing was necessary. I had to question my values about money, things, accumulation, happiness. NEVER sell yourself short. If you are passionate you will find a way. Check out these guys. They have a great book and a movie. http://www.theminimalists.com/

I think there's a bias against (corporate) lawyers here. The ones I know would definitely do something very close to their day job.

Also, it makes it seem like there's an endless supply of waiter jobs lined up for the the taking.

But this has been debated at length on HN https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/07/find-your-passion-is-terrible-advice/564932/?single_page=true and https://www.theminimalists.com/cal/

You might be interested in this 10 year old (well, ancient, but rebranded for millennials) trend called "minimalism":

You can still live minimally with a kid (obviously with school and such travel is harder, but homeschool/unschool is always an option). There are many tiny home documentaries out there with people who have kids. Because I don't have Netflix convenient, here's something I think might be relevant: http://www.theminimalists.com/familylinks/
