The Grayzone is an independent news site publishing political reporting on US foreign policy, intelligence agencies, media and conflicts.
One commenter lists it as a favorite publication, while others question its sourcing and the reliability of its claims in related threads.
You're right that I had a high snark:information ratio, there. Effort post incoming.
Here's a cite that goes into detail on the specific claims you've probably read about sterilization practices (partway through): https://thegrayzone.com/2021/02/18/us-media-reports-chinese-genocide-relied-on-fraudulent-far-right-researcher/
TL:DR; -- Historically, minorities were allowed to have way more kids on paper and the limits were rarely enforced in fact. Since ~2018 there's equality, via raising Han Chinese limits and applying even enforcement, so it's a change and there's some upset about it, but it's the removal of favoritism rather than the imposition of discriminatory measures. It got to even.
..
As far as who I trust. DC natsec think tanks are absolutely at the bottom of that list on ANY topic, they are guaranteed to be entangled with the military-industrial complex. I trust our actual military more than I do those think tanks. (And the one you chose turns out to be funded by... gulenists??? I did not expect that, frickin wild -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairfax_University_of_America)
On THIS topic -- the hard evidence points towards internment and mandatory patriot camp, which are bad, but no genocide, slavery or any of those other crazy accusations thrown about. This is.. not great but also exactly what the Chinese government says they're doing. They put out press releases saying, "yeah, it's mandatory job training and harmony camp". Western media are…
I'm not sure if the account is operated by a single person, and if it is, I'm not interested in "hanging them" for their opinions. This isn't a free speech issue. People go to Wikipedia thinking they're getting neutral information. How many people are aware, when they load some of these pages, like Max Blumenthal's for example, that it's mostly the work of one account hostile to that individual? And in this case, the work of an account that's already been banned for the hostile editing of other people's pages.
If you're interested, compare Max's page before and after Cross got involved with it. You'll see the same pattern we documented in our article. It just gets filled with more and more criticism.
This isn't the same for establishment-friendly voices. Have a look, for example, at the entries for Bellingcat or its founder Eliot Higgins (Bellingcat appears 5 times on Max's page). See how much criticism you find in those entries. Compare with the the articles below[1][2]. One reason of course is that Wikipedia deprecates sources it doesn't approve of, favouring instead "reliable sources" (mostly corporate, establishment-friendly news sites)[3].
Having followed the discussion and arbitration process in 2018, I don't really think anything will change. But I'd like to see more people become aware that what they read on Wikipedia, if it's political, is likely to be very biased and could be the work of nefarious actors.

I take this issue very serious issue and I've spent a significant amount of time researching it. I think there is a settler-colonial project occurring in Xinjiang, but there are some serious problems with many of the western sources that undermine the credibility of this report.
Report https://14ee1ae3-14ee-4012-91cf-a6a3b7dc3d8b.usrfiles.com/ugd/14ee1a_3f31c56ca64a461592ffc2690c9bb737.pdf
The evidence for most of these accusations come from Adrian Zenz and ASPI. The report says:
> the works of Dr Zenz, ASPI and similar others would be accorded significant weight and would have probative value in establishing the relevant facts.
Adrian Zenz is the key source for almost all of the genocide claims but I think him and his claims should be scrutinized. The Grayzone did a very critical analysis of Zenz and his claims that is worth exporing if you are actually interested in this subject. https://thegrayzone.com/2021/02/18/us-media-reports-chinese-genocide-relied-on-fraudulent-far-right-researcher/
I think global attention could help the people of Xinjiang, but not if it’s hijacked by western governments who have an axe to grind with China.
You are misrepresenting a couple of isolated cases in the beginning of the war and what looks like fake news as full picture.
Meanwhile in the Ukraine: "According to a July 11 report in Ukrainian media, Ruslan Onishenko, commander of the now-disbanded Tornado Battalion, was freed as part of President Zelensky’s scheme to release prisoners with combat experience. Along with an unwavering commitment to fascism, Onishenko is known as a psychopathic sadist who was involved in sexually assaulting children, brutally torturing prisoners, and murder.
Onishenko’s release follows a February 27 order by Zelensky to free other convicted former Tornado members like Danil “Mujahed” Lyashuk, a fanatic from Belarus who has openly emulated ISIS and boasted of torturing captives for sheer enjoyment. According to Zelensky‘s decree, prisoners with combat experience would be allowed to “compensate for their guilt” by fighting in the “hottest spots.”" [0]

One of my favourite publications is The Grayzone https://thegrayzone.com/ it helps to remind me that BS such as these https://narratively.com/the-literally-unbelievable-story-of-the-original-fake-news-network/?utm_source=pocket-newtab-global-en-GB are still being orchestrated by the US today.
In it, they have also reported about the Xinjiang situation, which you can all read here: https://thegrayzone.com/2019/12/21/china-detaining-millions-uyghurs-problems-claims-us-ngo-researcher/ Since I know that reading is not HN's forte, what basically it says is that there is no solid evidence for what's been reported about Xinjiang, and most of what's reported is basically lies fabricated by one Adrian Zenz. The same Adrian Zenz quoted in this Reuters article. It's really kinda funny what people hold up as evidence these days, no wonder why the world is going against the 'intelligence' from the 5-eye countries.
I'm sorry, but I'm a real conspiracy theorist on this. Winner was a woman tricked into leaking a story that supported the Russiagate yarn, and part of the team on the Intercept side is clearly a federal agent/independent contractor: https://thegrayzone.com/2020/05/20/the-intercept-reality-winner-richard-esposito-nypd/
IMO they would have found her no matter what; the reasons they gave for finding her could well be a parallel construction, and they had Esposito as an insider who could "accidentally" out her if all else failed. This was a media operation to leak the standard Russiagate stuff through a Bernie-supporting (biased against Russiagate) peripheral insider and to make a great show of prosecuting her to give the leak more credibility than it would normally be given, from an audience (lefties) that was normally very critical.
It didn't work.
