This is also untrue. You can live in perfect health on fat and protein alone. Humans can’t make the essential amino acids necessary for making some proteins so we need to eat protein, and there are a number of vitamins that are fat/oil but not water soluble so we need at least some fat but a no carbohydrate diet with sufficient fat is fine as long as you get enough fat. If you only eat lean meat that will be bad for you.

      http://www.diagnosisdiet.com/all-meat-diets/

      > To my mind, examples of real people eating mostly-meat diets for long periods of time gives us much more powerful information about meat and health than conventional scientific studies conducted over short periods of time in which one group of people eats a little more meat or a few extra servings of vegetables than another group of people.

      > Meet the Meat Mongers

      > The Inuit of the Canadian Arctic thrived on fish, seal, walrus and whale meat.
The Chukotka of the Russian Arctic lived on caribou meat, marine animals and fish.
The Masai, Samburu, and Rendille warriors of East Africa survived on diets consisting primarily of milk and meat.
The steppe nomads of Mongolia ate mostly meat and dairy products.
The Sioux of South Dakota enjoyed a diet of buffalo meat.
The Brazilian Gauchos nourished themselves with beef.

Technically you are defining a purely functional language and not functional programming.

John McCarthy might disagree with you if he was still with us saying LISP is not a functional language. Here is a great summary of his "Recursive Functions of Symbolic Expressions and Their Computation by Machine" https://swizec.com/blog/the-birth-of-lisp-a-summary-of-john-mccarthys-original-paper/swizec/5075

I really think we need a definition of functional programing language. I feel that many just see Haskell and other "pure" functional languages as the only functional programming language when I really don't see that is the point (Also Haskell isn't very pure looking at Monads)

Personal Definition. If you can program in a functional manner and it looks and feel good then it is.

R - More then just this reason but yes
JavaScript - Sort of but I would say no if my arm was twisted behind my arm
      Racket / LISP - Absolutely
Python - NO WAY First Class Functions alone don't make a functional language

SEEKING WORK - Remote, available for meets in SF until end of September, then Europe

I'm a full-stack web generalist. My favourite projects are heavy on frontend javascript and charge their users directly (or at least plan to).

I work primarily with early stage startups and have seen a variety of successes, failures, great things, and ugly things. As such, I make the rest of your team more productive in the long term even beyond what you hire me to code directly.

In the words of one of my clients "If we never had ya, we would've been fucked". I helped them take an inexperienced team from zero code, to MVP customers paid for in a month. It was fun.

PS: I'm also interested in one-off d3.js projects. Been itching to make more cool visualisations ever since I published a book about it.

And global warming was much milder when we had more pirates in the world [1]. Correlation is not causation. In the same period, YouTube's management style and public-facing attitude have changed dramatically, Google's general attempt at being the "good guys" has pretty much vanished, and beancounting has taken over as the guiding principle in many respects. I have zero reason to believe that had Adblocking not been a thing, there would have been any significant difference in the frequency or intrusiveness of the ads YouTube shows.

Re-print of this one from circa a year ago: http://swizec.com/blog/why-programmers-work-at-night/swizec/3198

I've been thinking on and off about this since I read it then; and I mostly agree with it.

Except for the 'bright screens' cause. In my case, the same work pattern happens if I'm reading a deep (but not too abstract) book, writing on paper, or doing some hardware work.

Which I found quite interesting, as the book case kind of matches the 'sleepy brain' cause, and the hardware part happens more when I already have a plan and I'm just building with almost no stop (maker-type activity?).

Hi, huge Swizec fan here. I've been following your extraordinary-ability story since 2016. It's an amazing, inspirational, funny saga about the work and perseverance required to get this done. Hope it's OK to share these here:
