The paleo movement has long since moved away from "eat what paleoliths ate" to focus on "nothing in biology makes sense except in light of evolution".[1] Multiple thought leaders (e.g. Chriss Kresser[2] and Robb Wolf) have acknowledged genetic changes such as lactase persistence and changes in iron metabolism that have arisen in the last 10,000 years. Succesful inclusion of dietary grains however, requires fundamental changes in our digestive tract. From Paul Jaminet's "The Perfect Health Diet" pg 196:

"Grasses evolved in concert with grazing mammals: both originated at the same and they became common together. [...] To reproduce successfully despite being regularly eaten, grasses evolved [...] toxic compounds specifically designed to sabotage digestion in mammals. [...] Grazing mammals have evolved defenses for these toxins-for instance, digestive organs such as rumens that allow the brunt of the toxins to be taken by bacteria." [3]

So things like gluten, opioids, agglutinin, and adiponectin trigger autoimmune reactions, neuropathy, accelerate degenerative diseases, and prevent absorption of micronutrients.

I find it ironic OP admits the studies of mummified remains were agricultural societies and then asserts "certainly atherosclerosis was common even among hunter-gatherers." Analysis of modern hunter gatherers and the most reliable accounts of hunter gatherer populations (researchers that actually lived among those they studied) attest to remarkably low occurrences of…

Early childhood diet has a huge impact on the development of the jaw. An underdeveloped jaw is what leads to crooked teeth. One substantial evidence of this are the studies conduced by Dr. Weston Price. For over ten years, he traveled to isolated parts of the globe to study the health of populations untouched by western civilization. His goal was to discover the factors responsible for good dental health. His studies revealed that dental caries and deformed dental arches resulting in crowded, crooked teeth are the result of nutritional deficiencies, not inherited genetic defects. Wherever he went, Dr. Price found that beautiful straight teeth, freedom from decay, good physiques, resistance to disease and fine characters were typical of native groups on their traditional diets, rich in essential nutrients.

healthy good DOES taste better. you've just been raised on rubbish so therefor you think that is how all food should taste.

I was the same. I hated peas, carrots, sweet potato, that sort of thing. A few years ago I was at a friends place and she grew all her own produce. It was the first time I had ever tasted fresh vegetables. Oh wow.

If (in Australia) the major super markets that advertise "We're the fresh food people" I'm sure more people would be enjoying something other than lollies (candy). As it stands at the moment any vegetable you buy from our two major players (coles and woolworths) are terrible.

      Eating better? http://robbwolf.com/ try him.

Robb Wolf is a prominent voice in the paleo diet movement. It's worth noting his comment on this article:

      --------

I'm not sure what it says about the broader scientific community that they seem incapable of actually articulating what has been written by folks in the Paleo/Ancestral health field?

I adress Pro. Warinner's TED talk here: http://robbwolf.com/2013/04/04/debunking-paleo-diet-wolfs-eye-view/

      ------

Most debunking of the paleo diet actually attacks a strawman. There ARE some people who say they eat paleo and follow this strawman, but most don't.

I don't see the diet as being universally applicable but the theory behind the diet is compelling. There's an overlap in risk factors for diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. There's also an overlap in medications(e.g statins/aspirin lowering cancer risk. metformin lowering cancer risk). It's possible that all these diseases share biomolecular cascades.
