Nous Research is an AI lab that publishes open models like Hermes, plus work on reasoning, distributed training, and infrastructure.
HN commenters name it as a leading open-source AI group and a US counterpart to Mistral, and point to its Psyche decentralized training project.
It's a fine-tuned model over Llama 3.1, which is the kind of thing I -- a non-expert -- would want to do and have though of doing if I trained a LLM for a specific programming language for private (non-cloud-hosted) use. So this is both interesting and yet I lack to knowledge to really understand its impact in the LLM world.

This seems significant?

> There is no AI company like Mistral.
The US equivalent of Mistral is Nous Research [0]. Also there would be no Mistral without Llama and it seems like everyone forgot that their LLMs derived from Meta.
For every 'Mistral' in the EU, there's 3 or 5 of them in the US.

Several. https://pluralis.ai/ https://nousresearch.com/ https://allenai.org/ and a few more I can't remember right now.
I'm personally on the other end: local small models working well for specific tasks (i.e. "agentic")
If this isn't by Nous Research, may want to consider renaming (https://x.com/NousResearch, https://nousresearch.com/)
there are some strong open source groups like NOUS research taking the fight
