For the colorblindness part, I think my core objection to the cultural changes which have occurred since I was a kid is not to increased awareness of biases per se, but rather this phenomenon: https://ncase.itch.io/wbwwb

My feeling is that the best way to reduce subconscious bias is to have good race relations. And the best way to have good race relations is to have more positive interactions than negative interactions.

A thought experiment: Imagine a non-Mexican person says "I love celebrating Cinco de Mayo. It's an excellent excuse to drink tequila!"

As a culture, we can decide whether that's a positive interaction or a negative interaction.

We can make it a positive interaction by laughing and clinking glasses.

We can make it a negative interaction by calling the person out for cultural appropriation or trivializing an important Mexican holiday.

My intuition is that making it a negative interaction is a big mistake, because it worsens subconscious racial biases and generally makes the world a less pleasant place. I recommend playing this game https://ncase.itch.io/wbwwb to better understand my intuition here.

It's worth playing every single game Nick Case has ever made.

Incredibly though provoking and makes you feel very different about the issues by actually involving you. I think there have been few pieces of media that emotionally impacted more than Nick's work. This is, what I feel like realizing the full potential of moderm media looks like.

EDIT: I should have probably also mentioned the fact that the Author has made a site collecting these types of sites: http://explorabl.es/

There is a noticeable uptick of barely concealed white supremacy here in the last 2 days. I would feel confident saying that the way upvotes and downvotes work on a cultural level has changed.

We've had conservatives here forever, but I haven't seen people talk about things like "replacement theory". I think there's been a definite overton window shift towards the right wing.

Yesterday there was a question where someone asked what /. is and there were 20 replies with "slashdot" in reddit style. I haven't seen a straight out of reddit comment thread like that for months.

I've definitely found myself angrier reading hacker news than I have been in the months previous. I haven't figured out if that's more of a "we become what we behold" (https://ncase.itch.io/wbwwb) or a real change.

Woah, this is a really cool idea. I'm a huge fan of games like these--stuff like Life is Strange, Coming Out Simulator [1], and Bury me, my Love [2].

This also has great potential for Silicon Valley-esque (the show) commentary on the tech landscape. I loved the pretend stack, how OverReact was released two weeks ago, and how the entire game is a Slack workspace!

Are you planning on turning this concept into a full game?

Nicky Case has made a lot of excellent games/lessons, but 'We Become What We Behold' is one of his best. The player takes the role of a photographer creating a social conflict to promote TV viewership. Things escalate rather too far, and the result is horribly realistic.

It's nothing that will be novel to you after that Burroughs quote, but it's still awfully poignant to be the one making it happen.

      my favorite "game"

Nicky Case: WE BECOME WHAT WE BEHOLD; a game about news cycles, vicious cycles, infinite cycles

      "ᴛʜᴇ ᴍᴇᴅɪᴀ's vicious cycles.
      Here's the feedback loop:

conflict → the media blows it up → even more conflict" [1]
