      The URLs are different:

      7233730 : https://medium.com/p/9f53ef6a1c10/ [0]

      7496137 : https://medium.com/human-parts/9f53ef6a1c10 [1]

HN's dup detector is crude and simplistic. Suggestions over the years to help fix it have been ignored, and efforts to help cross-link items have been lauded by some, and vilified by others who somehow seem to see the repetition as a feature. I guess that since it's documented (many times over, again, discussions repeated ad nauseam) it's definitely a feature rather than a bug.

Largely, I've given up. Let the discussions repeat the same points over and over - most don't care, others don't even notice. An engineer at heart, I find it almost physically painful to see such inefficiencies and loss of opportunity.

You say that as if it's a minor thing ("the only thing
I'd expect") but you might be expecting someone to risk
their life, get accused of rape by an unstable person,
put themselves in danger of injury or lawsuit. It's
      not a trivial matter.

      Strongly seconded.

This happens more often than one would think.

I do not want to alarm anyone but it is not entirely out of
the bounds of reason to expect law enforcement to NOT acknowledge
your good Samaritanism or worse, punish you for it.

In theory, yes. In practice I do not think we are doing nearly the job of ensuring quality protectors that the situation demands.

Follow the link to read about a recent case of abuse by the SFPD. Notably, they beat up and put into solitary confinement a person who they acerbically associated with "wannabe billionaires"

I am for supporting police with a good wage, but there are astonishing increases in police militarization and abuses of power. There should be a real balancing force, like with other professionals. One that works.

      > The only real rule is Don't be a douche.

The fact that you use a gendered pejorative[0] that refers to men while claiming to have a "healthy diversity of cultures" is both ironic and representative of modern PC-culture.

Talking to cops is a bad idea. I'd only do that if I had to and even then I'd minimize the exposure: https://medium.com/human-parts/good-samaritan-backfire-9f53ef6a1c10

Also, the abuse already happened, you are only stopping the dumber CP collectors from sharing images of it.
