IT Writing is a blog by a journalist covering Microsoft, .NET, Windows, developer tools, and the software industry.
HN links it for reporting on Microsoft developer news, such as .NET direction and a Visual Studio license expiring before a flight; commenters give no opinion on the blog itself.
> Does anyone know of any other incidents that make case against centralized servers?
Yes. Many of these are undemocratic, but others are merely unintentional problems of reliability induced by a single point of failure.

The impressive flickr account of blogger and friend Hossam el-Hamalawy
is facing censorship by flickr themselves! First they disabled
pro-palestine photos he had taken in Ireland, then they started
searching their old drawers for reasons to un-list his account from
public search.

The .NET Framework 1.0 included "Code Access Security" which included mechanisms to authenticate code with "evidence" (as opposed to traditional 'roles') and the apply permissions similar to your example: DnsPermission, FileIOPermission, RegistryPermission, UIPermission, and so on.
Unfortunately, the architecture was too complex for most developers and fell to the wayside. It was finally removed from the 4.0 Framework after being deprecated for some time.

> Nobody is buying an XBox to stream Netflix solely.
What if I want to? I don't particularly care what the manufacturer thinks, I bought the machine. Why does Microsoft gets a pass to dictate what I can do with the hardware I bought?
See for example people that bought PS3s for operating distributed clusters (because at the time the console WAS open) and then Sony locked down other OSes with an update. Why is this fair?

> I think the difference is that Apple wants people to buy these devices as your primary computing device.
How can a wristwatch be a primary computing device?
Many people like myself like static typing and don't particularly care for "traditional OO". I wouldn't put them all in the same bag.
Heljsberg himself (the creator of TypeScript) likes functional programming a lot and brings the best features to his languages.
I haven't tried TypeScript yet, but I look forward to it :)

The cheap 'two week sale' upgrade option is only available for certain regions which notably excludes the EU (apart from the UK). Due to the action against Microsoft concerning browser bundling, EU users will need to preform a wipe and clean install to get Win7.
