Google's official blog announcing changes to Google Workspace (formerly G Suite), including Hangouts, Gmail, Drive, and pricing updates.
HN commenters cite it as the source for product changes, such as Hangouts consolidation, less-secure app access limits, and Sites being discontinued.

If the “Enforce access to less secure apps for all users” setting is selected for your domain when this change takes place, we’ll automatically select “Allow users to manage their access to less secure apps” instead. You’ll no longer have the option to enforce access to LSAs at the domain level.
Following this change, if you “Allow users to manage their access to less secure apps,” users will still have the option to access LSAs, provided the “Less secure app access” setting is enabled at the individual user account level. To minimize disruption in domains where we’ve automatically changed the setting from “Enforce access” to “Allow users to manage their access,” this account-level setting will be on by default at the time of the change for all active users of LSAs.
Hey now, they're "actively working to develop a solution that will enable Hangouts to work in Firefox without a [NPAPI] plugin" [0].
These things take time, you know. Especially with the limited resources of Google, Mozilla not already having announced the deprecation of NPAPI plugins two years ago [1] and there not already being a web standard, mainly pushed by Google, that enables video and audio calling for every modern browser out there [2].

> only Hangouts is a video conferencing application
btw, there are three different versions of Hangouts: Classic, Meet, and Chat. Hangouts Classic will be EOL'd later this year. Hangouts Meet is the video conferencing for business. Hangouts Chat is a Slack clone for business that includes video calling.
Google will transition Hangouts Classic users to Hangouts Chat, not Meet:

Google Talk and Google Voice are two other Google products that (used to?) support video calling.
So, I don't use G Suite. I just have the free consumer Hangouts (without Gmail; deleted that a long time ago .. which after the G+ shutdown, means I can no longer search contact .. weird).
I'm super confused by their blog post:

So for regular old consumer Hangouts (formerly part of G+) is that going away too? What happens to the phone number I have attached to it. .. I feel like I should port that way from Google sooner rather than later.
> we are aware of the issue, and are definitely working on it.
I am guessing the fix for this issue would be to download the new Google Backup & Sync app [1][2] that replaces the current Google Drive client and is meant to be released on Wednesday [3]? :)
