My programming (development) resources include sources that are as much a evolution of the Internet itself. There's news:, pre Web, then web 1/1.5 and finally web2.0.

You may notice the sites are not always exclusively about "programming". Why? Well I find that a lot of the best stuff occurs at the edges of programming/development in lots of different areas. This wide scanning of sources is an attempt to avoid the narrow focus of any one "technology" and to see how "stuff" is being applied. Ultimately I'm just as interested in building stuff than just merely playing with cogs & gears. The cross-over of technology and technique is at the edges. Exactly where new stuff & ideas emerge.

      a) Newsgroups

The real source of Internet news, plain-old news-groups. Rowdy, without pictures but the source of infinite detail. I don't scan them as much in news-mode but still flick through them:

      - news:comp.lang.* (perl python core language)

      - news:comp.unix.admin

      - news:lucky.openbsd.misc (obsd chatter)

      - news:linux.kernel

      - news:rec.games.programmer (where all the good programming used to be discussed)

      b) Web1/1.5: sites & blogs
Every day I log onto these sites & scan them.

      - hackernews via my summary http://goonmail.customer.netspace.net.au/hackerid/

The new way to find clients is by following the below principles ...........

      1.Start a blog

2a.Write the content which showcases your expertise

2b.Identify pain points and share your expertise in those
      areas

2c.publish the interviews of various persons who are (experts / kind of popular ) in the area in which you are doing consulting.(or) any good content which will of interest to target audience.

2d.in above way you will be building the audience and trust.and people will referring you to their friends if any need arises.

3.Make sure your content is very good/remarkable so that people can share..........

4.As your content spreads you will be known to many people and inturn they will ask you /your company to help on their project.

5.And also develop tools which will be helpfull to target audience.( A good tool spreads like any thing which inturns spreads your company name)

6.Participate actively in various online groups (related to the area in which you are doing consulting) .

you will be suprised when people are contacting you...........

7.Keep an eye on SEO as search engines are driving huge traffic to sites.(good landing page, blog will help in improving the SEO)

8.Adwords (spend some amount on adwords for good targeted keywords to attract diverse audience)

The above is popular referred to as inbound marketing (i.e you will not shout/beg at your prospects for getting leads inturn prospects are coming to.........:))

      > Does anyone know of any other incidents that make case against centralized servers?

Yes. Many of these are undemocratic, but others are merely unintentional problems of reliability induced by a single point of failure.

I know that some online personalities have mentioned dual facebooks. [1]

Some people choose to go by a name that closely resembles their real name or in someway psuedo-anonymizes them. I think this works in some ways, but if anyone really wants to figure it out they can.

You don't need the same account name on Ebay and Amazon as you would have on twitter. That's a sort of middle ground.

It's important to figure out which is public facing and which is private facing. I'd use a version of noahc or mrnoahc for almost anything I want you to be able to find.

I can say that my hacker news comments have helped me a lot when reaching out to other people, and I suspect at a minimum you could at least point people to your comments on here.

Chris Brogan (and patio11 for that matter) is a pretty vocal champion of this concept. Puff up your (personal) brand wherever you go, but always link back to and maintain control of your stronghold. A company/personal blog on your own domain is the natural spot for that.
