Matt Haughey, founder of MetaFilter, writes about remote work, writing on marketing teams, DIY projects, and his Kickstarter experiences.
HN links it mainly for his post on the worst Kickstarter project he funded, plus his posts on working remotely.
But you don't even need a product to do a Kickstarter. In fact in most cases the product doesn't even exist, the only thing that exists is the design and even that gets changed once the projects is funded sometimes to the chagrin of the backers when they receive a product that did not meet the original design expectations. (for example: http://a.wholelottanothing.org/2012/01/lessons-for-kickstarter-creators-from-the-worst-project-i-ever-funded-on-kickstarter.html)
So yes, if all you're selling is an idea, instead of a product, then of course design matters as that's all you've got.
Edit: I have not seen anything coming from the economic literature about remote work. Sadly economists are focused on bigCorps and VCs who are not remote-friendly.
Some of the best articles from remote workers i saw recently:

Another dud, an iPhone case that blocks reception: http://a.wholelottanothing.org/2012/01/lessons-for-kickstarter-creators-from-the-worst-project-i-ever-funded-on-kickstarter.html
It actually surprises me that more big kickstarters don't fail on fulfillment, but I think that is because they are Strongly Encouraged to outsource it to one of kickstarter's partners.
Failing Kickstarter projects reminded me of a blog post by Matt Haughey: "Lessons for Kickstarter creators from the worst project I ever funded on Kickstarter"

There's no guarantee that a project will be successful – your funds are treated as a donation. Here's a story from a few weeks ago of a failed kickstarter: http://a.wholelottanothing.org/2012/01/lessons-for-kickstarter-creators-from-the-worst-project-i-ever-funded-on-kickstarter.html
I wonder if there's a way to deconfigure voicemail completely. Someone noticed that on a friend's phone & sort of envied them having "one less inbox." [1]
